PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a medicine people take to prevent getting HIV from sex or injection drug use.
When taken daily, PrEP is highly effective for preventing HIV.
PrEP is safe but some people experience side effects like diarrhea, nausea, headaches, fatigue, and stomach pain that usually go away with time.
There are two medications approved for use as PrEP: Truvada and Descovy. Your doctor will help you decide which one is best for you.
Most insurance plans (public and private) cover the cost of PrEP.
If you do not have insurance, there are programs that provide PrEP for free.
PrEP works for people of all gender identities and sexual orientations, youth, and people who inject drugs.

Services include screening and treatment for STis, STI prevention services, including HIV PrEP, reproductive and women’s health.

Medi-Cal, Contra Costa Health Plan, and Family PACT are accepted.
